Description
Shot between 2021 and 2024 all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south, Koji Onaka once again dips the scenes unfolding in front of him in a strangely alluring, nostalgic glow. In “Tin Roof & Chimney,” he turns his attention to buildings, corners, and views in rural areas – places marked by decay and patina. His photographs have a transformative power, seeming like projections from the past as much as fond memories from a future time traveler.
“Time has passed, and now family-run eateries and Japanese inns have vanished from in front of train stations across rural Japan. Shopping streets have closed their shutters, and children are absent from the parks. However, when I stepped off the train and walked towards the chimneys visible in the distance, fragments of memory, secretly lingering in the town, urged me to press the shutter.”
