Description
What remains of a colonial past when it disappears from the cityscape, is distorted in the archive – or reappears as a backdrop?
Invisible City is a visual exploration of the Chinese metropolis of Qingdao: Starting with a colonial photo archive, Jimmi Wing Ka Ho traces the visible and invisible remnants of German colonial rule – from restored 19th-century villas to myth-shrouded underground sewage systems. The city itself becomes an archive where history disappears, is rewritten – and yet continues to have an impact.
The book was created as part of the Artist Meets Archive Residency of the International Photo Scene Cologne at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Cologne.
