Description
[About the Artist]
Originally from China, Shanmei Yao now lives and works in Hesse, Germany. She studied at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG Karlsruhe).
Drawing has become her way of recording everyday life — collecting quiet and poetic moments that appear unexpectedly in daily scenes. With simple black-and-white lines, these fleeting feelings and atmospheres are reinterpreted through her own visual language.
From this ongoing observation emerge not only postcards, but also the beginnings of small stories. By living closely within different cultures and social environments, she hopes to understand them through personal experience, intimacy, and attention to ordinary details.
postcard 001 tree
There are two trees.
One is a Christmas tree. And the other one is also a Christmas tree.

postcard 003 Kleestadt
I live in Germany,
where there are only 1,200 people in the whole village.
My sister lives in China,
where 1,200 people live in a single building.
I can’t see her.
She can’t see me.

postcard 004 Friends
When we are old,
we’ll go on vacation by the sea and watch the sunset.
By then, we will live only for ourselves.

postcard 005 Surfer
He had just finished the best surf of his life,
changed out of his wetsuit,
and watched a crab walk by in front of him.
